In the 1950s, George Merkt and his wife set up a small cheese and sausage shop in the Salem, Wisconsin area, a shop that was the beginning of Merkts Cheese Company. In 1982 Merkts Cheese Company moved to Bristol, Wisconsin where the quality cheese spreads and other cheese products were produced until bel brands USA purchased the brand in April 2002. Today Merkts Cheese spreads are produced in Little Chute, Wisconsin at the bel brands USA manufacturing facility.
